An earthwork bank and ditch defined hillslope enclosure of probable Iron Age date. The enclosure was identified in 1994 during plantation clearance following purchase of the land by Exmoor National Park Authority.

Evidence of ironworking was identified within the hillslope enclosure at Timberscombe from surface finds and geochemical survey.

The Common includes land that was in Carhampton Parish during the mid 19th Century, but is now in Timberscombe Parish.
