Full Description
A small sub rectangular pit is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork on the eastern side of Timberscombe Common. Located at SS 9663 4180 close to the parish boundary between Timberscombe and Dunster, the pit measures approximately 17 metres long by 11 metres wide. It is not depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting it was abandoned prior to the publication of the map in 1889. A number of gravel pits are known to have been located on Timberscombe Common (MMO2576) and it seems likely that this pit is a further example of post-medieval gravel extraction.
