The site was first worked for iron in the 17th Century. It reopened in 1871 until 1888, with further attempts to reopen it made in 1918 and 1942. Various remains include a tramway, adits and shafts and ruined buildings.

The Lay Subsidy of 1327 suggests a medieval origin for Mousehanger. It became disused in the early 20th Century, now consisting of a farmhouse and outbuildings in various stages of disrepair with an associated possible water meadow.

The medieval borough of Dunster was first recorded in 1197. It is considered to be one of the finest examples of a medieval settlement in the country.

The cottages are first depicted on the early 20th Century 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey map. A Wellington Bomber crashed into one of the cottages in 1940 and badly damaged it.
