Full Description
Derelict enclosures and building remains suggesting a deserted farm site. [1,2] Not mentioned in Aston's list. [3] The building and earthwork remains of a deserted settlement are visible on aerial photographs north west of Elworthy Farm. Centred at approximately ST 0805 3531, several earthwork banks and the remains of at least two buildings can be seen, together with a possible trackway leading from Elworthy to the farm. It appears to be inhabited on the first and second edition maps and was probably abandoned in the early 20th century. Given that Downside is not mentioned in Aston's list of deserted medieval settlements in Somerset, it is likely that Downside is post medieval in origin. [4-7] The farm buildings are clearly displayed on the Tithe Map of 1842. [8] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [9]
