Full Description

A tank turret is situated in a gully in the rear of a mound at the western end of the target railway. [1] Centred at SS 92107 48623 is a tank turret. The turret is in good condition and the farmer states that it was retrieved from a tank which crashed into Henners Combe during World War Two. The turret appears to belong to a Cruiser tank, which according to Mr Isaac [2] were used largely for training purposes after 1942. [3] The tank that rolled down into Henners Combe during the war was a Churchill, probably of 153 RAC sometime in 1942. It apparently ran away from the firing point of Range B. The turret to be found at this location is that of a Covenanter tank - a tank used for training in the UK. The turret is probably the remains of a "hard target" that was located near this target rail. [4] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [5] N.B. A video of the recovery of the tank in Henners Combe mentioned by [2] is held by the Imperial War Museum archives. [6]
