Full Description
'F' SS 92504791. Minehead Without 8a (also listed at at SS 9260 4785 by NRHE). Mound c.10 paces diameter and 2 feet high. Very large hole in centre. Uncertain whether it is a barrow or a spoil heap from MW8 (MSO7660). [1] 5 at 'F' SS 9250 4790. The west barrow of a pair of confluent barrows, overlain by the larger barrow (MSO7660) and considered by Grinsell to be a spoil heap. [2] Completely covered with gorse and heather. [3] Cigar shaped mound 0.6 metres high. [4] Incorrectly identified as Grinsell's Minehead Without 5 by Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division [2] and D Thackray [3]. [5] A spoil heap from the excavation of MSO7660 is piled up in a mound on the west side of the cairn. [8] Scheduling revised with new national number (was Somerset 345) on 3 September 2002. [9] The spoil heap was noted on aerial photographs as a confluent circular mound at SS 9249 4791, measuring about 7 metres in diameter and described by [8]. [10-12] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [13,14]
