Summary

A mound of unknown date was noted on an aerial photograph dating from 1971; interim investigations found no further evidence, but a 2024 survey which measured the feature suggests it be considered a possible Bronze Age burial mound.

Full Description

A large round mound was seen on aerial photographs dating from 1971. [1] No mound can be seen on the ground in the vicinity of the National Grid Reference quoted by [1]. The aerial photographs [2] were not available during field work but nothing of significance can be seen on aerial photographs of the R.C.H.M.E. [3] or Ordnance Survey [4]. [5] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [6] The mound was surveyed as part of a walkover survey on Exford Common. It was identified on the ground for the first time, and is described as being 3.6m in diameter N/S, and 4m in diameter E/W. It is poorly defined on the south side, composed of turf or peat with little surface stone visible. While no firm dating is possible, it nonetheless seems likely that the mound may be a small Bronze Age burial mound and this record has been updated to reflect this likelihood. [7]
