Full Description

Semi-detached cottage. Mid C19, possibly incorporating earlier dwelling. Red sandstone random rubble, triple ridge tiles, roof continued out right gable end over verandah, decorative barge boards. Plan: not clear without internal inspection, probably 3-cell. One and a half storeys, gabled 3-light dormers with decorative bargeboard, ground floor three 2-light C20 casements, entrance on right return, C20 door centre. Three bay full height verandah, diagonally boarded timber gable infill, centre breaks forward, splat balusters, partly renewed in rubble left return, shaped brackets ground floor. Single storey one bay addition right. Random rubble wall with random rubble coping returned around garden. Verandah similar in style to more ornate one at Cloutsham Farm (qv), also part of the Acland Estate. [1] English Heritage Listed Building Number: 265503. First Listed on 02/01/1986. [2] 3-cell plan. Gabled roof [3] The house was mentioned in the 2003 Conservation Area appraisal for Bossington and West Lynch, which states "There is a larger listed group, which includes Dunkery View, Rose Cottage and Wayside to the NW and Walnut Tree Cottage to the SE… Wayside has a right gable end with decorative barge-boards and diagonally boarded timber infill over a three-bay veranda with splat balusters, and supported on shaped ground floor brackets. This typical mid 19th century feature is very similar in style to a similar yet more ornate one at Cloutsham Farm, several miles away, but also part of the Holnicote estate." [4] The building and wall were visited in March 2012 as part of the rapid condition survey of Exmoor's Listed Buildings 2012-13. The house received a BAR score of 6 and the wall a score of 4A. [5] The building is mentioned in the 2019 Conservation Area Appraisal for Bossington. [6] The building was assessed as part of the 2018-19 rapid condition survey of Exmoor’s Listed Buildings, receiving a BAR score of 6. [7]
