Full Description
A circular quarry or pit is visible on aerial photographs cut into the west facing slope north of Blue Gate. Centred at approximately SS 7589 3792, the quarry measures some 30 metres across. It is depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map and annotated quarry, suggesting it was still in use when the map was published in 1890. It most likely dates to the post-medieval period, and may be related to the mining activity at Blue Gate. [1-3] This was still labelled on the 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey map, suggesting the feature was still in use. [4] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [5]
