Full Description

The remains of a pit, possibly a quarry of medieval or post-medieval date, are visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork roughly 100 metres to the south of Waydown Cross at circa SS 9439 4155. The pit is irregularly shaped, roughly 80 metres long and 30 metres wide. The earthwork pit and access track to it are marked on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1889, indicating it was probably in use at this time and is therefore likely to be post-medieval, if not 19th Century, in date. However, it may have continued in use for some time after this date, as the access track may have shifted from that shown on the 1889 map to a position approximately 15 metres to the south. [1-3] The quarry is labelled "Waydown Quarry" on the 1st Edition map. [2] The site is also labelled "Waydown Quarry (disused)" on the 2020 MasterMap data. [4] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [5]
