Full Description
Several small pits are visible on aerial photographs as earthworks on the northern edge of Alcombe Common, Minehead. Three pits are visible; the first, at SS 9719 4405 is subcircular and measures approximately 16 metres across. The second, at SS 9720 4405 is more rectilinear and measures approximately 17 metres across, while the third, at SS 9725 4404 is irregular in shape and measures approximately 19 metres across at its widest point. All three are depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map and annotated as "old gravel pits." They presumably date to the post-medieval period, and were abandoned prior to publication of the map in 1889. [1-3] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [4]
