Full Description
A shallow depression is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork in a field southwest of Huntsham Cott, Wootton Courtney, and has been identified as the remains of a possible medieval extractive pit. Centred at SS 9505 4283 the subcircular pit measures approximately 30 metres in diameter, and may have been backfilled. No such feature is depicted on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1889, suggesting it was abandoned some considerable time prior to publication in 1889. The irregular field boundaries in the surrounding area are clearly medieval in origin, and it is reasonable to suppose that the pit may also be of this date.
