Full Description
Earthworks in a field south of Stamborough Farm were noted from a distance by D. Morcom. [1] The area in question is currently a pasture field. It contains an area of earthworks at its eastern edge, centred at ST 0280 3670. They are the remains of quarrying, most likely post-medieval in date. [2] The earthworks are clearly visible on aerial photographs. [3] A quarry, apparently still in use in the late 19th century, is recorded on the OS first edition map to the east of Little Stamborough, at ST 0300 3670 [4]. The land owner confirms that this was Stamborough slate quarry [5]. A quarry for tile stones near Leighland Chapel is mentioned in the early 19th century [6]. It would seem that the earthworks are the remains of quarrying for slate, associated with the exploitation of that resource in this area during the 19th century. [? - from 7] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [7] The quarry is shown on the 2022 MasterMap data. [8]
