Full Description

Grove Bank and the Garage are possibly 19th Century in date. The properties were described as of local interest. [1] There are no buildings shown here on the Tithe Map for Wootton Courtenay. [2] The 25 inch 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map depicts a broadly square building at SS 9378 4339, set back slightly from the road, and a rectangular building at SS 9379 4339, with the gable end of the latter facing the road to the south. The buildings are not labelled. [3] The 3rd Edition map depicts the rectangular building but the square one is not shown. [4] The 2018 MasterMap data depicts the rectangular building. A new square building is also shown, of similar proportions to that shown on the late 19th Century map [3] but set abutting the road to the south. It is labelled Grove Bank; the rectangular building is unlabelled. [5] Google Street View shows the square building is a large rendered house, set into a terrace in the hillslope. The rectangular building is a lean to garage featuring wooden barge boards in the gable end, a large metal shutter door with pedestrian door adjacent, and a brickwork wall on the eastern side. [6] A photograph dating to c.1930 shows the buildings in a similar arrangement as shown in [6], save that windows used to be accommodated in the gable area of the garage, with barge boards surrounding. A sign states this is "Burnell's Garage". Burnell started a public transport service from the village in 1919. Ball notes that a cottage (pictured) was replaced with George Burnell's house and garage. [7] The arrangement shown on the 2018 MasterMap data is repeated on the 2022 MasterMap data. [8] The heritage asset was assessed for inclusion on the Exmoor Local Heritage List in November 2022. It was decided to add the asset to the Local Heritage List. [9]
