MEM23426 - Chapel Cross signpost, Luccombe (Building)

A guide post is marked on modern MasterMap data. [1] The signpost was visited in October 2015 and its condition assessed. It has SCC (Somerset County Council) repeated on the four sides of a pyramid finial. The attached fingers read: D[missing] LUCCOMBE 1/2 MINEHEAD 5 ALLERFORD 1 1/2 BOSSINGTON 2 1/4 HORNER 3/4 PORLOCK 2 1/4 The post was made by Sheldon Wells. [2] SS 9063 4480. Chapel Cross lies to the east of the ruins of the medieval St Andrew's Chapel (MSO7401). A named guidepost is shown here on the 1888/9 Ordnance Survey map [3]. The current finger post is of a mid 20th Century Sheldon Wells type. A photograph from 1949 shows an early 20th Century narrow pyramid finial that has since been replaced; it also shows the fingers in a differing order, and includes most of the broken finger, which reads: CLOUTSHAM 2 [end not visible] DUNKERY BEACON 2 [end not visible]. The post is shown painted in black and white stripes in 1949. [4] The heritage asset was assessed for inclusion on the Exmoor Local Heritage List in February 2024. It was decided to add the asset to the Local Heritage List. [5]
