MEM22657 - Post-medieval prospecting pit on The Chains (Monument)

Summary

A pit and associated spoil mound were visible during field investigation in 2012. This is a probable prospecting pit. As it appears to cut drainage ditches, it is likely more modern in date than the drainage programme in the area.

Full Description

An irregular depression was noted during a non-intrustive walkover survey of the proposed mire restoration area on The Chains, undertaken by South West Archaeology as part of the Exmoor Mires Project. This is located near the junction of two drainage ditches and may be a quarry pit. [1] The Historic Environment Officer for the Exmoor Mires Project undertook a non-intrustive walkover survey of the proposed mire restoration area on The Chains, which included this site. Noted was a pit measuring 3 metres by 2 metres and an associated spoil mound; this is likely to be a prospecting pit. This appears to cut the nearby drainage ditches, suggesting it is more modern in date than the drainage programme in the area. [2]
