MEM22545 - Post-medieval prospecting pit on Deer Park (Monument)

A probable post-medieval prospecting pit was visible during field investigation in 2012. This was probably dug to explore the extent of the mineralized zone targeted by MEM22544 and MMO2950.

Full Description

A discrete shallow mineral exploration pit was noted during a non-intrustive walkover survey of the proposed mire restoration area on Deer Park, undertaken by South West Archaeology as part of the Exmoor Mires Project. This measures 1.6 metres by 2.6 metres, with an upcast bank to the southwest measuring 2.6 metres by 3.5 metres, with a height of 0.8 metres. This is cut into side of a probably natural drainage channel. [1] The Historic Environment Officer for the Exmoor Mires Project undertook a non-intrustive walkover survey of the proposed mire restoration area on Deer Park, which included this site. Noted was a probable prospecting pit dug to explore the extent of the mineralized zone targeted by the mining features MEM22544 and MMO2950. [2]
