Full Description

Boundary wall with railings, gate piers and gates. Early C19. Stone, cast- and wrought-iron. A low painted rubble wall across the full width of the site carries a low cast-iron railing with spearhead tops, on a saddleback coping. At the centre is a pair of square dressed stone piers on plinths, with pyramid cappings carrying ball finials, framing a simple gate in wrought-iron with dog-bars. A square rubble pier at the left-hand end, with pyramid capping, and the wall returns to the front of the building. At the opposite end the wall abuts a high retaining wall to the site. Included for group value. [1] N.B. Eastern extent of wall not clearly defined; mapping needs confirmation. [2] The boundary wall, gate piers and cast and wrought iron railings and gates which are part of the original construction of St Vincent. The central gable has a scalloped barge-board and inset date-stone. There is a fine interior geometric staircase with stick balusters and swept hand-rail, and original panelled doors with moulded panel surrounds in moulded architraves. [3] The building was visited in April 2012 as part of the rapid condition survey of Exmoor's Listed Buildings 2012-13. It received a BAR score of 4A. [4] The wall is mentioned in the 2019 Conservation Area Appraisal for Lynton. [5]
