Full Description

Churchyard gateway with gates. c1900. Stone piers and slated roof, wooden gates. A pair of plain rectangular piers carries a low-pitched hipped slated roof to a deep overhanging flat soffit. On a single stone step is a pair of plank gates to bold scrolled top rail and containing an open panel with diagonal vertical balusters above a dentil mould. There are gates of related design both to the S porch of Church of St Mary (qv) and at the W entrance (qv) to the church, all of them representative of the Arts and Crafts movement. [1] At the time of survey in early-mid 2002 for a Conservation Area Character Appraisal, the churchyard entrance gate and southern gate-piers, including a hipped and slated canopy had been dismantled or damaged. The latter appears to have fallen victim to a road accident, and the remains kept in an adjoining lay-by. The gateway dates from c.1900 and consists of stone piers and a low-pitched hipped slate roof, with timber gates of related design with Art Nouveau carvings, and the listing details mention that “they all form a valuable enhancement to the Arts and Crafts rebuilding of the church,” but were removed at the time of survey. [2] The gates were visited in April 2012 as part of the rapid condition survey of Exmoor's Listed Buildings 2012-13. It received a BAR score of 3A. [3] The gateway is mentioned in the 2019 Conservation Area Appraisal for Lynton. [4]
