MDE21365 - Post-medieval boundary stone north of Trentishoe Road (Monument)

Summary

A post-medieval stone marks the boundary between Trentishoe and Combe Martin parishes and manors. It is 1.15 metres long and 0.70 metres wide and inscribed on its upper face with the letters CM.

TRENTISHOE SS 64 NW 2/144 Boundary stone approximately 180 - metres north of Trentishoe Road at SS 627 480 GV II Boundary stone. Post-Medieval. Slate. 1.15 metres long and 0.70 metres wide. Inscribed on its upper face are the letters CM. The stone lies in the ditch on the east side of the boundary wall between the parishes and manors of Combe Martin and Trentishoe. [1] This is one of a group of similar boundary markers sited along the parish boundary. [2-4] The stone was not located during the rapid condition survey of Exmoor's Listed Buildings 2012-13. It received a BAR score of 1A. [5] The stone was located during a follow up visit in April 2014 and was noted to be lying recumbent in the ditch on the east side of the parish boundary. The stone was noted to have 'TM' inscribed on it. It received a BAR score of 4A. [6] This record was enhanced as part of the National Record of the Historic Environment to Exmoor National Park Historic Environment Record data transfer project. [7] The building was assessed as part of the 2018-19 rapid condition survey of Exmoor’s Listed Buildings, receiving a BAR score of 2A. The stone is now fallen and covered in vegetation, lying in a ditch on the east side of the parish boundary. [8]
