Full Description

Number 2 (The Old Cottage), Mars Hill is probably 18th Century. It adjoins Number 3, and is three storeys with three windows and a plastered front. There are wrought iron balusters to the flat roof porch, and chamfered rusticated quoins. It has wood casements, mainly with altered glazing bars. The trellis porch has been restored. The approach has two steps and a small stone retaining wall to the garden. [1] The building was visited in April 2012 as part of the rapid condition survey of Exmoor's Listed Buildings 2012-13. It received a BAR score of 6. [2] The cottage is part of a row of fisherman's cottages, when the cellars were used for smoking herrings. [3] A heritage statement dating from 2022 discusses the fabric of the building in respect of a planning application to subdivide the property. [4] The building is mentioned in the 2018 Conservation Area Appraisal for Lynmouth. [5] The building was assessed as part of the 2018-19 rapid condition survey of Exmoor’s Listed Buildings, receiving a BAR score of 6. [6] The building now forms part of the Rising Sun Hotel complex.
