Date

July 2024

Description

A community archaeological evaluation of the burnt mound was undertaken by the South West Peatland Partnership in July 2024. A single trench was excavated across part of the mound to a maximum depth of 0.46m, without reaching the base of the feature. The mound was found to comprise compact deposits of heat-affected stone and charcoal, which supported its previous interpretation. Excavated deposits were sampled to recover material for environmental assessment and radiocarbon dating. Two rangefinder radiocarbon dates suggest the feature was constructed in the Early Bronze Age, 2272-2031 Cal BC (UBA-55310) and 2199-1980 Cal BC (UBA-55311).
