Site Event/Activity record EEM14738 - 2013: Eval - Wintershead, Mires Project
Technique(s)
Organisation
Exmoor National Park Authority
Date
September 2013
Description
A total of five small trenches were opened up at Wintershead to understand the nature of underlying archaeology identified by the previous Geophysical surveys. Trenches 1, 2 and 5 targeted magnetic anomalies interpreted as possible hearths. Trench 4 was located over a heath-like anomaly and trench 3 was intended to section the linear feature identified by the earthwork survey. The excavations confirmed the presence of a prehistoric site of intermittant human activity of up to 4,500 years, although the limits of the site is still not clear.
