Description

A walkover survey was undertaken to assess the archaeological potential of Haddon Wood, on the south bank of the Haddeo river valley, before the commencement of a programme of Woodland Improvement Works. The woodlands were walked and any features affected by the proposed routes of the roads and tracks were photographed and their positions recorded on the maps provided by Exmoor National Park. The majority of features viewed were historic hollow ways, which would have linked the various settlements in and around the valley, some possible charcoal burning pits and lesser tracks, possibly for pack-horses were also viewed. Near to Hartford there were a number of field boundaries and enclosures on the slopes opposite the settlement, including an area of surviving ridge and furrow and a possible stretch of deer park pale, associated with the ownership of the land by the nearby Pixton Park, a large established sporting estate.
