Description

South West Archaeology Ltd. was instructed to undertake a desk-based appraisal and archaeological evaluation to the rear of the Luttrell Arms in advance of a proposed planning application. The Luttrell Arms is a complex multi-phase structure with a long history as a hotel and inn. Only the northern part of the complex would be affected by the proposed development, this being a tunnel, underground store and new garden bar. The archaeological evaluation trenching consisted of three trenches 20mx0.6m and identified the remains of structural features potentially relating to former phases of development of the Luttrell Arms property and its boundaries, subsequently demolished and robbed, most likely during 19th century landscaping. The retaining wall north of the skittle alley was built post-1840 and was subject to later repair and alteration.
