An earthwork consisting of a wide flat-bottomed ditch cut into the slope of the hill with an external bank. A reservoir built for John Knight after the 1820s, with possible origins as a prehistoric hillfort. Age: unknown / unconfirmed origins Rarity: fairly unique as water feature on Exmoor and rare if a modified prehistoric enclosure Distinctive Design: distinctive shape Historical Association: Evidential Value: probably only greater survey and archaeological excavation will clarify the origin and purpose. Social Communal Value: little known and not publicly accessible Group Value: unknown although could be higher if related to network of Knight era water features and/or prehistoric enclosures in the Barle Valley Collective Value: nothing directly comparable know
